what is the difference between a compound and a mixture?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

in a compound...the components are in a fixed proportion...for example..water is a compund..so every molecule of water wil contain two atoms of hydrogen and one atom of oxygen (\[H _{2}O\] ) where as the same cannot be said for a mixture...for exampple a mixture of sand and water wil have no fixed proportion.
