jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

What is your question?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

confused

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

about what? please be specific or post a problem

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ummm I really don't understand them. canyou explain them to me

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

exponents are a way to express repeated multiplication ex: 5^3 = 5*5*5 and 6^4 = 6*6*6*6

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

are you learning about exponents for the first time? or are you reviewing?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

reviewing. I just forgot how to do them

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

so how would you do 7^2 ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

umm i think it would be 7times7. right?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

which is 49

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

yep you got it, congrats

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thanks but what if it was like 8^9. someone told me than you would do 8times 8 only 8 times than. is that true.

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

yes, 8^9 = 8*8*8*8*8*8*8*8*8 (ie nine copies of 8 multiplied)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oooooooooooh. that explains alot. Thanks soo much
