A flower bed is in the shape of a triangle with one side twice the length of the shortest side, and the third side is 21 feet more than the length of the shortest side. Find the dimensions if the perimeter is 165 feet

OpenStudy (phi):

This looks almost the same as the last problem. You don't see how to do it?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yeah I just figured it out sorry

OpenStudy (phi):

what did you get?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I got 2x=72, x+13= 49 and x=36

OpenStudy (phi):

isnt' the third side x+21?

OpenStudy (phi):

You can check by adding up all 3 numbers, because it you got it right, they add to 165

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh wait, yeah it's 21 so 21+36 is 57

OpenStudy (anonymous):

can you help me figure out another problem please?

OpenStudy (phi):

?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

The Value of an uncirculated Mint State 65' 1950 Jefferson nickel minted in Denver is 3/2 the value of a 1945 nickel minted in Philadelphia in simular condition. Together the total value of the two coins is 10$. What is the value of each coin?

OpenStudy (phi):

When you do these problems, try to figure out what the unknowns are. How many are there? Take a shot.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Are there 2 unknowns?

OpenStudy (phi):

what are their names?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

the 1945 nickel and the 1950 nickel

OpenStudy (phi):

Good. Give them nice nicknames that sound math-like, x = 45 nickel, y= 50 nickel And x is really the value of the nickel

OpenStudy (phi):

Look at the second sentence, "together they total $10". Can you make that into an equation?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

im honestly not too sure

OpenStudy (phi):

if it said the value of the 45 nickel is $5, could you make that into an equation?
