Are you referring to membrane-transport proteins?

The general role is that the proteins transport ions and larger molecules throght the cellemembrane. These proteins are so importent becuase the molecules they transport are being used as transmitter drugs, metabolism ect. The molecules can not be transportet by the normal diffusion - and thats where the proteins become handy.
