"HAS RELIGION REPLACED RACISM AS THE BASIS OF DISCRIMINATION " VIEWS AND SUPPORTIVE INSTANCES

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I would say that it is race, that has replaced religion as the basis of discrimination. If you look back is was not that long ago that real racism actually came into the world. When Spain kicked out the jew in the 1600's(I think it was about then maybe earlier) they first let them convert to Christens(or leave the country) but then after that something seemed weird about them. So Spain kicked them all out regardless of their religion. An example of religion being the only motivator is when Muslims expelled the Hebrews and Christians from the middle eastern countries in about 600 AD. There are many more examples of this if you do some research on the internet. Hope that helped!

Racism and Religious Discrimination have always been complimentary forces because they stem from the same human need for a tribal community. This sense creates boundaries between "Us" and "Them" - even though the organization between the two is largely arbitrary. It is a stretch to say that one or the other is more prominent in society. Racism has gone largely underground due to social pressure in most of the world, but that doesn't mean it doesn't exist. Religious intolerance on the other hand has risen proportionally as a means of expressing the same sentiment. Often enough throughout history, you find the two working hand-in-hand though, and where they correlate, you typically see genocide.

Also, another complimentary expression of this sentiment is nationalism. When all three are present, you get situations like The Holocaust.
