the available dimensions on which a molecule is free to vibrate is known as degree of freedom.if a molecule can vibrate in only one dimension either X,Y or Z,then its called 1st degree freedom,if molecule can vibrate in any two dimension freely either X,Y or X,Z or Y,Z then its called 2nd degree freedom & finally if molecule can vibrate in all given 3 dimensions (X,Y and Z) then molecule is said to have 3rd degree freedom.
