how does the air space in a leaf relate to transpiration?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Its been a few years since i studied transpiration, but i believe the air pockets are constructed to allow for the largest possible surface area, to allow the water in the leaves to evaporate as quickly as possible. Ergo, the more air/cell barriers in the leaf, the more areas that evaporation can occur.
