if a plane can travel 490 mph with the wind and 430 mph against the wind, find the speed of the plane in still air

OpenStudy (stormfire1):

My guess would be 460 mph...the average of 490 and 430.

OpenStudy (stormfire1):

Mathematically, it would be where s = speed and w = wind: s + w = 490 s - w = 430 2s = 920 s = 460 The wind speed must also be 30mph
