Explain the need for ventilation systems in multicellular organism?

Otherwise gases would still be present that could damage the function of the cell. Also certain gases need to be removed to remain a steep concentration gradient, eg. oxygen and carbon dioxide in alveoli and red blood cells. Also multicellular organisms don't have a large enough surface area to volume ratio for gases to diffuse out like in single celled organisms.
