what is the most important thing to do if your writing a book? I usually write good short stories in my spare time for fun would it be easier making a book of short stories or try focusing on longer pieces of works?

It seems like you would enjoy writing a book of short stories rather than a longer piece of work. Personally I love writing well-written short stories so I think a book of short stories would be just a great as a novel.

Yeah, pretty much just do whatever makes you happy, either aspect has it's pros and cons, but in the long run writing is really just about doing what makes you happy, that's why writing is so great, because it can be anything you want it to be.
