Yes if u r cycling towards them in reverse i.e. backpedalling ........

Acceleration is a vector.  While it's magnitude is completely independent of coordinate system, it's direction, or sign, is not.  You could set up a coordinate system in which moving towards the hikers is actually in the negative direction.
