The equation d = 400 - 2.5t describes the distance in meters d of a canoe-racing team from the finish line t seconds after a race starts. When is the team 175 meters from the finish line? When is it 100 meters from the finish line?
Okay, so for this you need to place your distance in for d and then solve it for t. So the first one would go like this: \[175=400-2.5t\]\[-225=-2.5t\]\[-225/-2.5=t\] So, t=90 and since they have told us it is in seconds we now know that after 90 seconds the canoe team will be 175m from the finishing line. :)
im confused would i do 174 divided by 2.5 , 175 times 2.5 ?
Well, I went ahead and subtracted the 400 across the = sign which gave me -225 = -2.5t then you divide like shown (-225/-2.5) which gives you t=90
sorry its cuz i needa show my work on the page . so i subtract 400 by 2.4 and then wt ever i get i divide tht by 2.5?
Yes, I showed my steps for the first one except for subtracting 400 across the = sign.
ok so this is what i got. i did 400-2.5 and got 397.5 than i did 397.5/2.5 and got 159, is that correct?
No, you cant subtract 400 from 2.5 because 2.5 has your variable. You have to get your variable on one side and the rest of your numbers on the other side (of the equal sign). You subtract 400 from 175 (first equation I listed) and then you have the 2nd equation I listed, then you divide and get your answer. Hope that explanation helped.
ok so i subtract 400-175 and i got 225 and then i divide 225 by 2.5 and i get 90 :)) i get it now
