what does "e" represent? how come "e" has a value in the calculator? does this apply to all mathematical problems? i'm asking out of curiosity instead of rewriting a homework problem.

It arises in population and continuous compounding interest problem. ie, dp/dt= kp you will learn it when you take differential equation

You will learn about e much sooner than Diff EQ... you use it in natural logs (by definition)... most of wikipedia's information is accurate: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/E_%28mathematical_constant%29 But wolfram has better info about current use. http://mathworld.wolfram.com/e.html
