what are the rules when you add and subtract negitive and positive numbers?

OpenStudy (amistre64):

..... always add?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

?

OpenStudy (amistre64):

subtraction is just "adding a negative"

OpenStudy (amistre64):

like signs are always positive different signs go negative

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok but what if u subtract a negitive?

OpenStudy (amistre64):

3--5 .... like signs are positive 3+5

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok umm -4 --7 would equal...

OpenStudy (amistre64):

-4--7 -4+7 7-4 = ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

??????????

OpenStudy (amistre64):

yeah, that doesnt help me understand your confusion any.

OpenStudy (amistre64):

do we have to start back with "what is a number" and go from there?

OpenStudy (pottersheep):

++ becomes + -- becomes + +- becomes -

OpenStudy (pottersheep):

i.e. 1 - - 1 = 1 + 1 = 2 whereas 1 + - 1 = 1 - 1 = 0 1 ++ 1 = 1+1 =2
