Why must a plant cell remain a hypertonic environment inside?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

The plant cell must remain hypertonic so that it does not lose water to the outside environment. The consequences of being hypotonic would be that water would leave the cell into the environment and the cell wall would not have enough pressure exerted onto it to be sustained and maintain its shape.
