when do you use a semicolon?

You use semicolons when you're trying to separate two sentences that relate to each other without using and, or but.

an example:

I talked to my biology professor today; He was eating an apple as we spoke.

you can also use semi colon when your are giving a list....
examples: there was shoes, coats, hangers, boxes. or.... her purse contained the following; shoes, makeup, pencil, gum etc.
