How does the split ring commutator work in a d.c. motor, and the slip rings in a a.c. generator??? i'm confused between their functions :P
its easy
Split rings in a DC motor reverse the direction of current
in ac we use slip ring commutator
let me explan
In AC generator, Slip rings convert Ac to DC
during first half cycle of input ..current flows throgh the commutator through the slip ring
but in next half cycle the direction of current reverses
split rings in ac generator are meant for continually direction changing current in OUTPUT, while its in reverse...
as input current is ac
that is current of opp polarity gets induced in the same brush dush during each half cycle
hence we get ac from it
this is not the case in a dc motor
here we need dc as output
so we use split ring commutator
here during each half cycle one split ring changes its contact to other brush
resulting in unidirectional current flow
and thus unidirectional torque
split ring is use in dc motor to make the direction of current uniformly . the rotor of generator rotate by 360 degree . as per principle generating wave be sinusoidal for 180 degree +ve & 180-360 degree -ve .so to make the direction of waveform unidirectional the split ring rotate after each interval of 180 degree . the difference between slip ring & split ring is slip ring are stationary . & split ring rotate after 180 degree
