A variety of things. We just looked into a bunch of hot spots in the code and tried to optimize them (too many unnecessary database lookups happening). We'll be looking at more as time goes on.

You should think of making image maps: Put all the images except the avatar into one image combined. The size will be the same, but you will get less requests, since you would just need to download one image.
