What does "contrapositve' mean? Kids terms(:

OpenStudy (amistre64):

it means to switch and negate in logic terms

OpenStudy (amistre64):

p -> q; contraPs to -q -> -p

For example, take the following (true) proposition: "All bats are mammals." We can restate that as "If something is a bat, then it is a mammal." The contrapositive is, "If something is not a mammal, then it is not a bat." In mathematics and in logic, the contrapositive is always guaranteed to be true, as long as the original proposition is true. If the original proposition is false, the contrapositive will always be false, as well. From Wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Contraposition

I have this (true) statement: If a girl is pretty, then I like her the contrapositive of that statment would be: If I don't like a girl, then she is not pretty.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

to get the contrapositive of my statement, I switched the two expressions around, and negated them.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

If the original statement was true, then the contrapositive of that statement must also be true.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

What does negate mean.? I've gotten too many different answers.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

the negation of a statement basically means the opposite of that statement. Therefore, to negate a statement means to get the opposite of that statement I have this statement: I like girls. The negation of that statement would be: I do not like girls. similarly I could have a statement 3 = 3 the negation of 3 = 3 would be 3 != 3 (3 is not equal to 3) notice that while the original statement was true, it's negation is false. also, if my negation if True, the my original statement would be False

OpenStudy (anonymous):

if my negation is* true, then* the original statement would be false
