Latress77: a bike road race starts at an elevation of 870 feet and passes through five stages where the elevation changes by -684 feet, 17 feet, -236 feet,-440 feet, and 286feet. At what elevation does the race end. can someone translate this mathematical equation and solve it.

OpenStudy (agreene):

So, you know you start at 870. from there it is just a matter of interpreting the question. if you lose elevation, you subtract; gain and you add. 870 - 684 + 17 -236 - 440 + 286 = elevation at end of race.
