A train leaves New York for Boston, 200 miles away, at 3:00 P.M. and averages 40 mph. Another train leaves Boston for New York on an adjacent set of tracks at 5:00 P.M. and averages 65 mph. At what time will the trains meet?

The thing about this problem is that the total distance traveled by both trains is 200 miles to the meeting point. d = r t Let t be the elapsed time for the B to NY train, speeding at 65mph, to meet the other train after leaving Boston. Solve the following for t: ( (40*2 ) + 40 t ) + 65 t =200 t = 8/7 hours The trains meet at 6:08:34 PM
