1. There was a war going on and they were sent away by their parents, and their plane crashed.
2. Because the pilot (i think) died, and he was the only adult on the island
3. Ralph uses the conch to call all the other boys to bring all the survivors to one area
4. In the book they describe him as a "genuine leader", he's responsible, and has good ideas, plus he knows how to keep them all safe
5. Because he is the leader of the choir so he feels he should be the chief as well
