Who invented the first computer

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Nobody. The first digital computers were built on the shoulders of giants. Same with the mechanical computers and automata (which were precursors to the computer)

OpenStudy (airdawg5571):

It depends. What do you mean by computer? If you mean "a device that carries out calculations", I believe that would be the Sumerian abacus invented 4500 years ago. On the other hand, the first mechanical calculator (adding machine) invented in the 17th century by Wilhelm Schickard and Blaise Pascal and the first four-operations mechanical calculator by Gottfried Leibniz. Jumping over Jacquard's punch-card programmable loom, to more recent times, the Zuse Z3, 1941, is considered the world's first working programmable, fully automatic computing machine invented by Konrad Zuse. The University of Manchester are the proud owners of the first experimental transistor computer, made in 1953 aaand Intel Corporation released Intel 4004, the first complete CPU on one chip, and also the first commercially available microprocessor in 1971. Pick one and make a wish.. the draconids are falling tonight.

OpenStudy (osanseviero):

the definition of computer is really different http://wiki.answers.com/Q/Who_invented_the_computer please read that answer, there are different answers for your question

OpenStudy (anonymous):

If you count the abacus then you must count the tally sticks made around 5000 years before the abacus

OpenStudy (osanseviero):

the abacus isnt a computer, but it is something that actually became the base of computers

OpenStudy (osanseviero):

The real answer is that many inventors contributed to the history of computers and that a computer is a complex piece of machinery made up of many parts, each of which can be considered a separate invention.

The First Ever 'Personal' Computer was Invented By Steve Jobs.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Wikipedia has extensive information regarding the history of computers: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_computing

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@mishra I thought it was Steve Wozniak who built the Apple I, and not Steve Jobs.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Steve Jabs Is Dead

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@agdgdgdgwngo I apologize. Yes Steve Wozniak built the Apple 1 and Steve Jobs had the idea of selling the computer.
