Question from a layman. Theoretically, is the space between particles in a nucleus so small that if you could get something small enough between them, you could break anything?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

inbetween*

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Do you mean space between nuclei, or space between protons and neutrons within a nucleus?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Well, which one would make a clean 'cut', so to speak?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

The nucleus has got nucleons held by strong nuclear forces. It is caused by continuous fight between them to gain control over even smaller particles. It's like dogs fighting for a bone. So, the nucleus has got some space but can't get something into it.

I don't entirely get what you are asking, but I'll give it a try. Yes, there is space between the nuclei of atoms in a material, and it is always theoretically possible to split them up. It is not always easy to do though. You can't split something with very strong intermolecular bonds (eg diamond) with something else with weaker

OpenStudy (anonymous):

We are taking about the nucleus whereas in your example of diamond you are taking of chemical bonding

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Chemicals bonds are intramolecular, I'm talking about intermolecular bonds, which is what it sounded like he was asking about when he said "cut". If you were talking about a nucleus Major, then akabhinav is correct. The strong force in the nucleus is greater than the electromagnetic forces that hold objects together, so you couldn't split an atom by prying it apart, so to speak.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

He said space between particles in a nucleus
