im doing a comparative essay on two works. if im doing in-text citations using MLA, do i need to put the authors name in brackets each time i use a quote, or just every time i quote the other author?

After you add the quote, in parenthesis, write the authors name... And do it everytime you add a quote.

Yes unless you mention the author in the sentence e.g. Mark Twain states, "..." ( ##).
