Choose an integer n to be the smallest of your 3 consecutive integers. Then, your other two integers are n+1 and n+2. You want the sum of the first and third to be 40. So, n+2+n=40 2n+2=40 2n=38 n=19 Therefore, your 3 consecutive integers are 19,20, and 21.
