what is genetic recombination?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Genetic Recombination is the process in which chromosomes "|dw:1318355464366:dw|cross over" during meiosis to increase variation in the resulting gametes. When homologous pairs line up (one from each parent) they over lap and "trade genes" so that when separated the chromosomes have a combination of the original maternal genes and a mix of the paternal gene. This occurs during meiosis 1 during metaphase. I am sure you can find some better pictures online sucha as http://www.phschool.com/science/biology_place/labbench/lab3/images/crossovr.gif
