yes, it is only the genetic material that you can find in both. a cell consists of the cell membranes in which you find a pool full of other things like specific proteins, mitochondria and the nucleus who stores the genetic material of the cell. in comparison: a virus just consists of a protein shell and its genetic material. that makes it not a living organism but just a piece of DNA packed in a shell that can invade a cell and merge its genetic material with the cell material in order to let the cell reproduce more viruses.
