The SAT is the general aptitude test with math, writing and reading sections (I think that's what it is now, I took mine 7 years ago and it was just verbal and math). The subject tests are specialized tests for a particular subject (physics, calculus, chemistry etc.) and are usually more in depth. When applying to colleges make sure you find out if they require subject tests ahead of time because they aren't given as often as the general SAT
