OpenStudy (anonymous):
A high ratio of surface area to volume in a cell allows for a cell to obtain all the nutrients that it needs, and excrete all the wastes it produces through the cell membrane. Cells can only be so large, because their volume increases at a higher rate than their surface area. As a cell's volume grows larger and larger, it needs an enormous surface area to carry out all the functions that are necessary for its survival. Does this help?
