M = 1000 So MM = 1000+1000 = 2000 C = 100 CM = 1000-100 = 900 (think IV = 5-1 = 4...it's a bit weird) X = 10 XX = 10+10 = 20 I = 1 II = 1+1 = 2 put this all together: MMCMXXII = 2000+900+20+2 = 2922 So MMCMXXII = 2922
