What is the solution set of |x + 5| > 1?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

x+5 > 1 or -x-5 > 1 x > -4 or x < -6

OpenStudy (anonymous):

how did you get -x-5?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

| x+ 5 | > 1 x+5 > 1 or x+5 < -1 x+5 < -1 ---->> -x-5 > 1

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Recall the definition of |x|, |x|=x when x > 0 =-x when x <0 So here,|x+5| means either |x+5| is positive or |x+5| is negative so when positve \[(x+5) > 1 \Rightarrow x > -4 \] and when negative: \[-x-5 > 1 \Rightarrow x+5 < -1 \Rightarrow x < -6\]

Oh ok, I thought you would just take the |x+5| and make it like and then x + 5 > 1-5 x > -4 and thats it?
