what is the difference between democrats & republicans?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Democrats want to keep health care not knowing who is going to pay. Republicans want to keep health care as long they know for sure that somebody is going to pay.

Democrats are liberal for a reason they want the government to control most everything. They want the government to be big enough to give everybody everything they want. Republicans are conservative they want smaller government and they want people to be in charge of their own lives. remember a government that is big enough to give you everything can also take everything from you.

Two people answered this question and decided to inject their own political views into it. How sad and pretentious of them The Republican party was formed in the mid 1800s, although some would consider Thomas Jefferson to be a republican. The modern Republican party was founded in 1854 by anti-slavery activists, modernizers, ex-Whigs and ex-Free Soilers, the Republican Party quickly became the principal opposition to the dominant Democratic Party and the briefly popular Know Nothing Party. The chief cause that led to this was opposition to the Kansas–Nebraska Act, which repealed the Missouri Compromise by which slavery was kept out of Kansas. The Republicans saw the expansion of slavery as a great evil. The first public meeting where the name "Republican" was suggested for a new anti-slavery party was held on March 20, 1854 in a schoolhouse in Ripon, Wisconsin. By 1858, the Republicans dominated nearly all Northern states. The Republican Party first came to power in 1860 with the election of Lincoln to the Presidency and Republicans in control of Congress and the northern states. It oversaw the saving of the union, the destruction of slavery, and the provision of equal rights to all men in the American Civil War and Reconstruction, 1861-1877. As you see, the Republican party has done a lot of great things. Unfortuneately, the party is hijacked by lunatics and morons. Personally, I think principals should trump party. Did you know that prior to 1937, the majority of black voters were republican? The democratic party is the oldest political party in the USA--and perhaps the world. The party dominated US politics, from 1832 to the mid-1850s, with such leaders as presidents Andrew Jackson, Martin Van Buren, James K. Polk, and Senator Stephen Douglas, who usually won against the opposition Whig Party by narrow margins, as both parties worked hard to build grass-roots organizations and maximize the turnout of voters. Both parties used patronage extensively to finance their operations, which included emerging big city machines, national networks of newspapers. The party was a spokesman for farmers across the country, urban workers, and new immigrants. It advocated westward expansion, Manifest Destiny, greater equality for all white men, and opposition to a national bank.

Jwalker forgot to mention that the Republican and Democratic parties of today were just the opposite in the 1800s. That is, the republicans of the 1800s are the democrats today and vice-versa. The main difference between the two today is that democrats advocate large government while republicans advocate small government.
