In the grand scheme of things, how necessary are word problems???

Very important - not only are they there to make you think and develop your problem solving skills, they are also good for real life scenarios.

How far do you plan on studying mathematics. It travels throughout all the way through so you should get used to them.

When you're confronted with a word problem, narrow down an equation, the variables you know, and the variables you want to know. Remember, your teacher would never solve you a problem which could not be solve, or a problem which you didn't have the intersect to solve. I'm sorry - I've never come across the centre of maths throughout my years of schooling.
