solve 3x^2-1=5x

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Move over the 5x to the other side of the equation by subtracting it from both sides: \[3x ^{2}-5x-1=0\] and then factor. It is a quadratic equation. So find two numbers that multiply to (a*c) or (3*-1) and add to (b) or (-5)

OpenStudy (alfie):

\[3x^2 -1= 5x => 3x^2-5x-1=0 => \] Delta = 25+12= 37 x = \[\frac{5\pm \sqrt{37} }{6}\] Since thirtyseven is no perfect square, those two are your solutions.
