How did Augustus gain power in Rome?
Octavian's rise to power began during his Uncle and adoptive father's lifetime. Octavian served Julius Caesar well, and in the process learned much and forged political bonds of alliance with other major Caesar supporters, including Mark Antony. By the time of Caesar's assassination, Octavian had risen to a position within Caesar's legions and with in Caesar's government that he was able to ally with Mark Antony and Lepidus to form the Second Triumvirate. They then defeated the conspirators who murdered Caesar in a series of bloody battles and divided Rome's lands among them. Over time, the alliance that formed the Second Triumvirate fell apart. Lepidus was old, and his lands were rapidly annexed by Octavian. Meanwhile, Mark Antony forged an alliance with Cleopatra of Egypt and backed that her son, Cesarean, had a stronger claim to the throne then Octavian who was only Caesar's nephew, did. Octavian galvanized Roman support against Mark Antony saying that he had gone against Roman values by divorcing Octavia (Octavian's sister) and marrying Cleopatra. The two forces would eventually meet at Actium, where Cleopatra and Mark Antony were decively defeated, and they eventually committed suicide. With the last of his rivals dead and defeated, Octavian occupied Egypt as a Roman conquest and won the honorary name "Augustus" from the Senate and became the first Princips (First Citizen) or Emperor of Rome.
