What is the 17th term of the arithmetic sequence 17, 21, 25, … ?

OpenStudy (amistre64):

what does each term differ by?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

honestly im not sure how to do this im trying hard to understand

OpenStudy (amistre64):

17 + d = 21 21 + d = 25

OpenStudy (amistre64):

do you see how we could find the value for d?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I got 77.

OpenStudy (amistre64):

to acquire an understanding would require you to work thru the steps to see how they play together.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

just see that it adds 4 each time so the first term adds 4x0 the 2nd term adds 4x1 and so on so the 17th term adds 4x16 to the first term (17)

OpenStudy (amistre64):

the terms are numbered 1 2 3 4 5 6 ...., and the generic terms is simply lableled "n" meaning, some "n"umber. in an arithmetic sequence we can add or subtract the same amount each time to discover each new term. But we have to know what our start is maddy summed up the steps nicely tho :)
