General calculus question about relative extrema. Why do we need to bother with the first deriv. or second deriv test. why cant we take our critical numbers and plug them into f(x) our original function, and then compare the y values. Relative max's will be greater than relative min's . or is this only with two turning points? is there a counterexample where relative max < relative min?
