How does high altitude affect the number of RBCs in the blood?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

High altitude elevates the number of RBC's in the blood. Since there is less oxygen available at higher altitudes, the body compensates by producing more red blood cells that in turn can carry more oxygen from the air in the lungs to the blood in the capillaries. The process is controlled by the substance erythropoietin (epo) which is abused in some sports to heighten the oxygen-carrying ability of the athlete's blood, thus making him able to perform better.
