A boat can travel 184 kilometers on 92 liters of gasoline. How much gasoline will it need to go 470 kilometers? do I set this word problem out as; 184/92 = 470/x or 92/184 = x/470??

OpenStudy (anonymous):

The second one.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

why?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

if psst said it i'd chose the other one...lol jk

OpenStudy (anonymous):

When you solve the problem, it comes out to be 235. If you plug it in for x, it'll show 92/184 = 235/470 Cross multiply and it'll be 43240/43240. That's how you check your work. I am right, Insanity! So shut up!! :) lol

Lemme rephrase how, from just reading that problem will I know that it is 92/184?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

and not the reciprocal

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Because when you read it, you don't say 184 kilometers per 92 liters of gas. The proper way would be 92 liters of gas per 184 kilometers. 92/184

brilliant
