Mya is planting 11 colored flowers in a line. In how many ways can she plant 4 red flowers, 5 yellow flowers, and 2 purple flowers?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

11!/(5!*4!*2!) Would you like explanation?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Red = 4 Yellow = 5 Purple = 2 my answer is in combinations... 3^2 = 9

OpenStudy (anonymous):

11! would be if you have 11 different flowers.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Now because you have 4+5+2 same ones you are counting a lot of cases twice if you do 11!

Andras is good go with his reply

OpenStudy (anonymous):

4 red can be arranged in 4! ways 5 yellow in 5! ways 2 purple in 2! ways So these are the ones that you are counting too many times. So the sol: 11!/(2*24*120)
