It began at the end of WWII. It was primarily an ideological dispute between the US and the USSR with both countries wanting to dominate the post war world. Western Europe, Canada and Australia was allied with US and Eastern Europe and China were allied with the Soviet Union. While the Soviets and the US never actually fought (hence the term "cold" war) there were a few proxy wars where the US or Soviets would fight people being supported by their adversaries. IE Vietnam War or the Afghan War
