I believe this belongs in a different section but.. A direct object is the object that receives the action of the verb. For example, in "I ate an apple", the verb is ate, and what I ate, the apple, is the direct object. The object of a preposition follows a preposition "of, by, near", etc. For example, "He ate the apple by the door." The door would be the object of preposition.
