What advice would you give a new student?

STUDY STUDY STUDY....and take lots of notes:)

That's an excellent question! I would say that the most important thing that every student should know is how to use book to go from understanding less to understanding more. Memorizing facts just to pass a test is not enough; you must learn how to interpret those facts in order to have a better understanding of yourself and of the world around you. This is the goal of education and becoming advanced in the art of reading will not only get you through school, but it will get you through life, making you a lifetime and successful learner. Therefore, learn how to read intelligently in order to get the most out of your books. Mortimer J. Adler's classic book on the art of reading can teach you how: "How to Read a Book: The Classic Guide to Intelligent Reading" by Mortimer Adler and Charles Van Doren (ISBN: 978-0-671-21209-4).
