\[3x ^{2}-5x-12\] multiply 3 to 12 and rewrite (this is an old jedi trick) \[x ^{2}-5x-36\] (x-9)(x+4) Put 3 back in by dividing since we removed it by multiplying (x-(9/3))(x+(4/3)) (x-3)(x+(4/3) or (x-3)(3x+4)
