we do order of operations:
perform whats in grouping symbols first
evaluate any terms with exponents
perform multiplication and division as it occurs left to right
perform addition and subtraction as it occurs left to right

so we have | |
inside the | | we have -8+4=-4

so we now have 3-|-4|

but |-4| means what is the distance from -4 to 0 which is 4

so now we have 3-4

but 3-4=-1

so 3-|-8+4|=-1
