If you pour a handful of salt into a full glass of water, the water level will actually go down rather than overflowing the glass.why?

The electrostatic nature of the salt will pull the water molecules closer together, but only for a certain amount of salt proportional to the amount of water. Once you reach saturation level the water level will rise when adding more salt.
