x/6 + x/8 = 14 (the lcd was 24 so i multipled both sides by 24 and got 4x+3x=336 and divided 336 by 7 and got 48 but the answer is supposed to be 5.5, can someone please tell me what i did wrong)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

cross multiply first, -> (8x+6x)/(6*8) = 14 -> 14x/48 = 14 -> x = 48 I don't see how you could have ever got 5.5. :(

If you don't believe me, substitute 5.5 in place of 'x' and check if you get 14 (You'll get 1.6) which does not satisfy the equation. Hence 5.5 is wrong and you were right from the start.
