why cant we feel the earth rotating

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Think of when a passenger is in a car that is moving at a constant velocity (no acceleration) on a smooth surface. The passenger is moving at the same speed as the car. To the passenger it would feel like they were not moving and they would see the surrounding moving. Everything in the Earth's system is moving at the same constant velocity. The earth has negligible acceleration. To us it feels like we are not moving. to the outside observer (in Space), the earth's rotation is obvious.

When you think of feeling movement, it is more of feeling acceleration.

thnx for it.. and another question.. suppose im looking at a star now.. is the star at that position in the space at that particular moment.. (my friend told that the star is of few days earlier, is it true)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

You have to consider it's distance and how long it takes light to cover that distance. Sun light takes about 8 min, while another star might take a thousand years to reach us. You also have to consider gravitational lensing when trying to determine a star's position.

im amazed.. which grade r u currently

Junior in college, math major.

Watch some videos on Einstein and special relativity. Good luck!

thnx for the sugstn

OpenStudy (unklerhaukus):

we cant fee the earth rotating because we are rotating with it, we can only see 'old' light from stars that traveled an incredible distance just as those at the distance of our stars can only see what has already happened on earth years gone by. light years
