I want to spice up my history essay a bit, and saying that a state "collapsed" is a cliche. Can I say that it imploded?

imploded is entirely different from collapsed, try using downfall, breakdown, debacle or cave-in :)

If the state actually imploded, sure. Use it.

as an analogy imploded works, especially if the 'collapse' originates from within the state
